In 2021, about 20 pedestrians died each day in the United States, which represents the highest average number in four decades.
The Boston Herald reported on the alarming trend, which comes from a new estimate by the Governors Highway Administration.
In Massachusetts, at least 71 lives were lost in pedestrian accidents in 2021.
Pedestrian accidents are among the most serious types of personal injury cases. With virtually nothing to protect them when struck by cars, people on foot are vulnerable to catastrophic injury or even death.
Common causes of pedestrian accidents
To reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents, it’s important to understand where they happen and what the common causes are.
Here are some common locations and reasons why pedestrian accidents often occur:
- Parking lots: Areas in front of stores, restaurants, and other establishments are dangerous for people on foot. Drivers are looking to park or back out of spots. They may ignore or fail to notice pedestrians walking through the lot and may cause a collision.
- Distracted or texting drivers: Texting, one of the top distractions, plays a role in many accidents, including those involving pedestrians.
- Speeding: Drivers who exceed the speed limit may not have enough time to stop for someone using a crosswalk. They may lose control of the vehicle and strike a person walking along the road.
- Drunk driving: People who drink and get behind the wheel have a slower reaction time. They may drive recklessly and hit someone trying to cross the road.
Does Massachusetts have a pedestrian accident problem?
According to the Herald article, Massachusetts needs to do more to keep pedestrians safe. One safety advocate told the Herald that the Bay State has not seen as big a spike in pedestrian fatalities as in other states, but “we have not seen the progress in reducing pedestrian deaths and injuries that is needed to create safer streets.”
The advocate said redesigning streets to “calm” traffic is one approach. Speeding remains a significant cause of pedestrian fatalities.
How a pedestrian accident attorney can help
If you or someone you love was hit by a car, it’s important to talk to an experienced pedestrian accident attorney as soon as possible. When drivers make careless or reckless decisions and cause injuries or death, they must be held accountable. Unfortunately, the insurance companies will push back against claims. They may even argue the victim did something to cause the accident.
That’s why you should talk to an attorney about your legal rights and options. Insurance adjusters may sound friendly and helpful but often will try to get you to admit fault. Or, they'll pressure you into accepting a lowball settlement offer. Remember, the insurance company is always looking to keep compensation to a minimum.
