High Tech Can’t Replace Common Sense for Connecticut Drivers

Connecticut auto accident attorneyAdvanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), high-tech auto safety features designed to help keep drivers safe, include lane departure warning systems, blind spot monitoring systems and backup cameras. These systems have shown to be so effective that some now come standard on all new car models.

However, drivers often take these systems for granted. A recent article published by AAA showed that as many as 80 percent of drivers did not fully understand the significant limitations of ADAS, meaning that many people were not using these systems correctly.

Effective when used correctly

One example of this is the blind spot monitoring system. Many people believe that this system can detect anything that may be hidden in their car's blind spot. But that is not the case.

These systems can alert drivers when another vehicle is traveling in their blind spot, especially when it is moving at roughly the same speed. However, if that vehicle is moving too fast, the system may not register its presence. Similarly, if a pedestrian or bicyclist is in your blind spot, the system might not register them.

"When properly utilized, ADAS technologies have the potential to prevent 40 percent of all vehicle crashes and nearly 30 percent of traffic deaths," said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. "However, driver understanding and proper use is crucial in reaping the full safety benefits of these systems."

No replacement for responsible driving

Advanced safety technology is a welcome addition to our commutes, but it cannot be taken for granted. It cannot be assumed that the technology will do all of the work for us. If your car is equipped with any of these or other safety features, do your research. It's important to fully understand what these systems can and cannot do in order to use them correctly.

The Connecticut car accident lawyers at The Law Offices of Salomone & Morelli know that ADAS are meant to assist drivers, not drive for us. No technology can replace human reflexes and capabilities.
