Rising traffic fatalities in prompt calls for change
Connecticut is facing a growing road safety crisis, with traffic-related fatalities continuing at an alarming rate. In the first three weeks of the new year, 20 people lost their lives in crashes, according to data from the University of Connecticut.
Recognizing the urgent need for action, state lawmakers introduced several proposals to enhance road safety and reduce preventable deaths, according to NBC Connecticut.
One of the key proposals under consideration is lowering the legal blood-alcohol-content (BAC) limit from 0.08 to 0.05. If passed, Connecticut would join Utah as the only state in the country with such a stringent limit.
The bill also expands a state pilot program training police officers to conduct roadside blood tests for cannabis impairment.
While such measures have faced opposition, particularly regarding lowering the BAC limit, supporters argue that stricter laws are necessary to save lives.
What are lawmakers doing to improve road safety?
Another proposed bill seeks to increase penalties for drivers who fail to follow the Move Over Law. This law requires motorists to change lanes or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, Department of Transportation (DOT) workers, or other stopped vehicles on the roadside.
Tragically, two public servants – State Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier and DOT worker Andrew DiDomenico – were struck and killed in separate incidents last year.
Focusing on traffic law enforcement, road design
Beyond legislative measures, lawmakers are collaborating with law enforcement agencies to enhance the enforcement of existing traffic laws. Advocates, including Transport Hartford Program Director Jay Stange, also emphasize the role of infrastructure in improving road safety.
“The reality is that you don’t drive at the speed that’s posted on the side of the road; you drive the speed the road allows you to drive,” Stange said, according to NBC Connecticut.
What can drivers do to reduce the risk of accidents?
An experienced car accident lawyer in Connecticut knows drivers can do their part to keep roads safe. The following are tips for drivers to think about to avoid serious crashes:
- Don't drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Obey posted speed limits and drive at a safe speed for road conditions
- Stay off your phone and minimize distractions while driving
- Follow the Move Over Law and give space to emergency responders
- Be cautious in construction zones and around pedestrians
