Connecticut Sees Second-Deadliest Year for Traffic Crashes in a Decade

The rise in car accident fatalities across Connecticut over the past year serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety.

Preliminary data indicates that 314 people lost their lives on Connecticut roads in 2024, surpassing the 2023 total of 308, according to an article published by CT Insider. While this number falls short of the tragic record set in 2022, when 367 lives were lost, any preventable death is one too many.

Recent incidents highlight the devastating consequences of reckless and distracted driving. Over the holiday season alone, several lives were lost, including a pedestrian struck on Christmas Eve in Danbury and a fatal crash in Windsor just days later. These tragedies highlight the urgent need for drivers to adopt safer habits.

State Sen. Tony Hwang aptly described the enduring impact of these preventable losses. Quoted in CT Insider, he said,  “People who have lost a loved one in a preventable tragedy such as a traffic fatality are still living it many years later.”

What is Connecticut doing to address the problem?

Organizations like Watch for Me CT, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, are emphasizing the critical need for all road users to slow down and share the road responsibly, CT Insider reports. Speeding reduces reaction times and increases the severity of crashes, making it a primary focus for advocates.

The following are tips for drivers (from the Connecticut State Police):

  • Drive sober: Plan ahead to avoid driving under the influence.
  • Obey speed limits: Speeding is a leading cause of severe crashes.
  • Use signals: Simple habits that save lives.
  • Avoid distractions: Put away your phone and stay focused on the road.

Keep in mind that traffic safety is a shared responsibility. While lawmakers can implement policies to address impaired driving, wrong-way accidents, and speeding, the real change comes from drivers exercising common sense and respect for others on the road. Sen. Hwang noted, “We can pass all the laws we want, but ultimately, it boils down to common sense.”

Anna Stern of Watch for Me CT echoed this sentiment, urging drivers to watch out for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists: “Roads are for more than just cars. Being vigilant when driving can help prevent a tragedy.”
